The Chapel is a place of meditation and worship, a place that expresses the intangible spirit of the university. It was constructed the early 1950’s at the head of the Drill Field as a memorial to those who have died serving their country in the armed services. The names of alumni who have died are inscribed in the limestone columns.
The upper terrace and Pylons form a plaza at the end of the Mall entrance to the campus. The area between the Chapel Pylons and the Torgerson Hall Reading Room is envisioned as a future ‘Honor Court’ capable of hosting important campus events while also accommodating everyday uses. The lower terrace serves as the head of the Drill Field, the signature campus space at the university. The lower terrace has a garden feel to it, planted with large Red Oaks, flowering trees and shrubs, and spring bulbs. There is the need for additional flowering trees and bulbs.
